What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The BMI formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). It provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
BMI Categories
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5-24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25-29.9
- Obesity Class I: BMI 30-34.9
- Obesity Class II: BMI 35-39.9
- Obesity Class III: BMI 40 or greater
BMI Limitations
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations:
- Doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass
- May not be accurate for athletes with high muscle mass
- Doesn't account for age, sex, or ethnicity differences
- Not suitable for pregnant women or children
